Multi-Dog Households

Best Pooper Scooper for Multiple Dogs

Two dogs is double the problem. Three is when most people start looking at professional services. Here's what works before you get there.

Updated July 2025  ·  A1 Scoop Warriors

We service a lot of multi-dog households. Three labs. Two shepherds and a corgi. Four dogs of assorted sizes who use every square foot of the yard. This is not a niche situation - roughly a third of American dog owners have more than one dog, and the cleanup math changes significantly when you add that second or third animal.

One dog = 3-5 pounds of waste per week. Two dogs = 6-10 pounds. Three dogs with two of them large breeds = 15+ pounds per week. At that volume, your tool and your routine matter a lot more than they do with one small dog.

Tool First: What Handles the Volume

Best for 2+ dogs

Wide Rake and Deep Tray

For multi-dog yards, the rake-and-tray setup wins on volume and speed. You're covering more ground per pass and the tray holds multiple deposits before you need to bag and empty. Look for a tray that's at least 4-5 inches deep. The Bodhi Dog Pooper Scooper Set and the Four Paws Wire Rake with Bin are both rated well for multi-dog use on Amazon. If you have large breeds, the Doody Digger heavy-duty version is worth the slightly higher price for the sturdier tines.

Dedicated Outdoor Waste Bin

This isn't a scooper but it belongs in the setup. A lidded outdoor waste bin next to your back door means you're not bagging every session - you collect into the bin throughout the week and bag once on trash day. The Doggy Dooley In-Ground Waste Digester is a different approach entirely - it breaks down waste in the ground like a miniature septic system, which eliminates the bag step completely for high-volume yards.

The Routine Matters More Than the Tool

With multiple dogs, skipping a day turns into a bigger problem than with one dog. The deposits from three dogs over two days is more than most single-dog owners deal with in a week. A daily five-minute session is dramatically easier than a 30-minute session every five days. This is honestly the main thing we tell multi-dog owners: the tool helps, but the schedule is what keeps it manageable.

When to Consider a Service

Honestly, a lot of the multi-dog households that hire us didn't realize how affordable it was until they looked it up. Three dogs at weekly service is still under $30 per visit in most cases. If you're spending 20-30 minutes doing cleanup three times a week, that's an hour and a half of your time per week on dog poop. The math starts to look different. Check our pricing page if you're curious - the quote tool gives you an exact number in about 60 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dogs use the whole yard. Is there any way to contain them to one area?

Some dogs respond to training and will use a designated potty area consistently. Others won't. Putting a patch of pea gravel or a specific ground cover in one corner and directing your dogs there when they go out is the most common approach. It works better with some breeds than others. If it doesn't work, the rake-and-full-yard scan approach is what you're working with.

What should I do if one of my dogs eats another dog's waste?

This is called coprophagia and it's pretty common, especially in multi-dog households. It's worth mentioning to your vet. One practical reason to stay on top of cleanup in multi-dog yards is specifically to prevent this - the less accessible the waste, the less opportunity for it.
